Tired of feeling triggered?

There are many processes I use with clients that help them navigate conflict and build communication skills.  I have found this particular process to be the most effective way to deal specifically with the phenomenon of feeling “triggered” as a result of an interaction with someone.   What I mean by feeling triggered is that you are feeling a physiological change in your body that is associated with the fight/flight or freeze response.  You might experience this in a number of possible ways:

  • your body feels tense or constricted
  • you find yourself wanting to react in ways that feel like they are “out-of-character” with who you are or how you’d like to be with others
  • you find yourself wanting to attack, judge or blame the other person
  • you feel exasperated and want to walk away
  • you feel hopeless that anything positive will result from continuing the conversation
  • you feel like you want to defend yourself but your brain freezes and you are at a loss for words
  • your mind starts racing as you grasp for things to say
  • you blurt out things that don’t make sense to you

Do any of these sound familiar?

If any of these habitual reactions sound familiar to you then I’m thrilled to tell you that the process in this audio will mostly likely be a huge help for you in transforming this physiological phenomenon.

My hope is that you will download this audio to your phone or .mp3 player so you can use it whenever and wherever you feel triggered.  Use this audio as soon as you notice you are triggered and can get away to a quiet, private place.

The process works for 2 reasons:

  1. Slowing down - When the fight/flight/freeze response is activated things seem to be happening very quickly.  In this process we are stopping and taking the time to explore what is happening in our bodies and minds and to fully experience the variety of experiences that are present.

  2. Repetition - Through repetition we allow ourselves to uncover different facets until we feel more grounded and at peace.

I cover 2 repetitions in the audio.  Many people feel a shift after 3 or 4 repetitions so I’d recommend you repeat the audio at least once.

Once you complete the audio, you may also want to print this bookmark to carry with you so you can do this process on your own - any time, anywhere.

I have experienced big growth lately, especially in self-awareness and self compassion, and the "bookmark process" has been cornerstone.  Relationships at work are changing, where I'm more direct, more powerful. I've trimmed down without even trying to lose weight. I'm taking care of projects that have been in stuck mode for years, and healing relationships that have had long-standing hurt. I feel alive!
